Apple iPhone Review Roundup

Let’s not reinvent the scrollwheel gents. Here are links to reviews of the iPhone around the Internet:

Walt Mossberg’s Review

But the iPhone has a major drawback: the cellphone network it uses. It only works with AT&T (formerly Cingular), won’t come in models that use Verizon or Sprint and can’t use the digital cards (called SIM cards) that would allow it to run on T-Mobile’s network. So, the phone can be a poor choice unless you are in areas where AT&T’s coverage is good. It does work overseas, but only via an AT&T roaming plan.

David Pogue

The Web browser, though, is the real dazzler. This isn’t some stripped-down, claustrophobic My First Cellphone Browser; you get full Web layouts, fonts and all, shrunk to fit the screen. You scroll with a fingertip — much faster than scroll bars. You can double-tap to enlarge a block of text for reading, or rotate the screen 90 degrees, which rotates and magnifies the image to fill the wider view.

MSNBC

The specially formatted YouTube videos work great on Wi-Fi, but can display in a lower quality when you’re not at a hotspot and are using AT&T’s EDGE network. At launch, only a small percentage of the millions of video will have been reformatted to work with the phone. (Fortunately for me, this included a couple of swell Amy Winehouse videos.) The fact is that YouTube without the long tail of hundreds of thousands of videos is barely worth the effort. But Google and Apple promise that by fall the entire collection will be available for iPhone streaming, and that users will be able to fill up every idle moment with unproductive glory.

USA Today

Finger-tapping takes getting used to. Best advice: Start typing with one finger before graduating to two thumbs. You also have to learn to trust the device; an intelligent virtual keyboard auto-corrects mistakes on the fly and anticipates what you will type next to try to prevent you from making a mistake.

Though you’re frequently touching the display, I didn’t notice fingerprints when iPhone is on.

New York Post

But the reality is that the iPhone has a very small screen compared to even the tiniest laptop. You can’t read much of an article on a Web page without panning back and forth across. This is true of word-processing, too; at a size comfortable enough to read, you can’t see either the full length or width of a document.

Where is the SIM slot located?

Quick Link: The Apple iPhone Tour

iphone-tour.jpg

You can view the guided tour of the Apple iPhone on the Apple Website. The video is about 25 minutes long. It answers several questions about the iPhone such as UI functionality, the Safari browser usefulness and real estate considerations.

What it doesn’t address are the following:

  • battery life issues with all the functions taken into consideration

  • iPhone quick functions (how it functions as a “no look” phone and MP3 player) — as from the looks of it, you need to have your eyes gaze into the huge screen to do most of the functions

  • there seems to be no place to attach a strap

Buying an iPhone necessitates the purchase of a case as well as a screen protector. That thing looks too delicate to survive when it kisses the pavement. The screen is made of glass for crying out loud. Get one this Friday!

Statement: “I’d rather give up on sex than my mobile phone”

It’s Sunday morning, and this should probably wake you up. Here are some statements taken from Reuters, on the importance of phones are in comparison to opportunity cost:

One in three people would not sacrifice their mobile phone for one million pounds or more, with women leading the way on those most likely to refuse, the survey by the Carphone Warehouse and the London School of Economics found.

Most respondents aged between 16 and 24 would rather give up alcohol, chocolate, sex, tea, or coffee than live without their mobile phone for a month.

In contrast, more than 40 percent of the those aged over 45 would give the phone simply to be able to have their favourite hot drink.

Asked the same question, I would reply nonchalantly with, “no comment.”

LG KU580 and the “Google Phones”

Apple is doing it. So is LG. And the tech industry has been abuzz with Google partnerships. Take for instance the LG “Google” phone that upon further inspection, doesn’t really offer much apart from Google-bundled applications. The only reason I would see why I would want this particular model would be because it looks like a slightly better Chocolate.

If phone manufacturers did it right, a Google partnership would offer incentives to making searches on your phone. This in paper does make sense to advertisers, as your phone’s real estate is confined to a 240 x 320 screen that allows for more conversions for text links.

“Not just a cellphone…”

Where I’m from, credit card theft isn’t such a big deal. In fact the rumors of credit card swiping scandals aren’t as ominous as how they are claimed to be. What is actually more rampant is cellphone theft. The mobile phone serves more functionality that just making calls - no surprise here. It’s a PDA, a clock, a camera, small computer … but these are hardware givens.

What the cellphone is to most of my countrymen is a payment hub, a metro rail transit pass, a debit card,and many more. With the stiff competition between telcos, the providers are not only coming up with cheaper services - but more innovative ones at that. Telco “A” provides subscribers with prepaid link to the metro rail system that automatically deducts balance from your phone when you flash a handy piece of plastic across the rail sensor. Telco “B” innovates a way for you to send off prepaid load from your postpaid line to your kids phones. Your kids can also “ask” for credit by sending an SMS to an operator number. Telco “C” allows you to purchase three postpaid lines for only $20.00 with a set amount of credit for each phone. This supposedly is targeted to families who need to be constantly in touch, earning only $6.00 a day.

The phone isn’t just a communications device back here. If stolen, pains have to be taken to cut the line and renew certain value added services. In fact, a lot of people back home tend to invest more on the phone’s insurance provided by the telco rather than their own health insurance.

LG KU250 “3G for All”

LG has released one of, if not the cheapest “3G for All” phone. This is supposedly the mass market booster for 3G phones in the worldwide market. The phone retails for about $100.00.

The phone comes with two cameras, a 1.3MP camera behind and a 640 x 480 camera in front for video calls. The phone’s real estate is one of its main attractions, apart from the 3G features. It is tight, robust and boasts huge buttons.

Other features include the following:

* MP3 and video recording
* Full Internet Browsing via WCDMA (384kbps)
* MMS / Email
* WAP 2.0 / JAVA 2.0
* microSD expansion
* Bluetooth and USB connectivity

For what it is, the KU250 is a handy phone for a cheap 3G solution. It offers nothing really spectacular with regards to its feature set, but the $100 price cannot be ignored. It is a bit of a turn off though that the device includes memory expansion — but has no bundled card in its default package.

I would like to say that this phone may make for a cheaper 3G modem alternative which you can pair easily with your computer for wireless surfing.

Using Fring on the Nokia N95

Perhaps one of the most powerful mobile phone applications released today is Fring, an instant VoIP conduit that allows you to use the voice features of Skype, Google Talk, MSN and SIP on your mobile phone. A couple of days ago I posted some pictures of the unboxing process of the N95. Because of Fring, my N95 is now also a VoIP phone. I’ve tested the app over my WiFi network at home, and it really simulates the benefits driven by having unlimited telephone calls to anyone who is online using any of the above mentioned third party applications.
Installing the application to your mobile phone is quick and easy. All you need to do is go to the Fring homepage and key in your mobile number. An SMS will be sent to your phone which contains a link download for the app. I’d advise downloading over WiFi if you have a crappy data plan. You will then be asked to key in a new username and password which will link to the four supported services. Voice quality was loud and clear with some breaks when I would move around the house through doors. But I guess the experience will be different according to your ISP’s quality of service.

Innovations of “Share A Load” Services

Here in the Philippines, the pre-paid (as opposed to post paid / line subscription) business model accounts for a huge percentage in the revenue stream of telcos. Because of this, several “unique” things have developed to ensure that the inconvenience of not having any credits will not happen. One such device is the “pass a load” system where a subscriber can send credits from his or her own phone to anybody under the same telco prepaid service. This is done by registering your phone via SMS, typing out an SMS containing the indicated amount and a service number. Easy as pie.

Of course, there are some system quirks like delayed sending of credit, but essentially, the service works to the advantage of consumers who like to keep a hawk’s eye in tracking expenses.

Unboxing a Nokia N95

So much marketing has been placed into the Nokia N95. Here are some photos of me unboxing a unit just to show you the suspense and vigor that comes with unpacking something that is “the same as other things but is like nothing else.” The experience is similar to stacking up one of those Russian egg doll sets.

nokia-n95-box-1.jpg

img_7818.jpg

img_7816.jpg

I’m greeted with a marketing tease of the product. It is no joke that one spends for roughly the price of a decent spec laptop just to get this phone. Might as well make the unboxing experience for the new owner gleeful, helping you justify the reasons why they bought this in the first place. Reinforcement is the key to positive self concept.

After removing the “teaser” packaging, you get the box with the phone itself lying comfortably on more neat-o packaging. You get answers to the soliloquys mentioned in the previous box. The Nokia N95 is more than just a phone. It drives the point through and through and through your skull. Again: Reinforcement is the key to positive self concept.

Sony Ericsson K850i Cell Phone

K850i is one of the new phones announced by Sony Ericsson yesterday. Being a Cyber-Shot handset, K850i obviously comes with impressive photography capabilities (5MP, auto focus, Xenon flash) and digital photo editing (Photo Fix that automatically improves light balance in one click, PictBridge, etc). Added to the mix is the new camera user interface that intuitive enough to scroll between functions. Still about the camera, with a single push of a button, its lens cover will automatically retract and upon switching to camera mode, the phone keypads will have an illuminated icons which indicate the camera control buttons.
I own K800i cell phone, and like mine, K850i’s multimedia functions are pretty standard. However, it does come with a brand new media browser which hopefully will improve our media experience. Personally, I vote SE’s media browser over Nokia’s.

One of the most admirable feature is the built-in HSDPA (3.5G) support which provides up to 3.6MBps download rate. Eventhough I live in an area that doesn’t have 3.5G coverage yet, but if I ever decide to replace my K800i, I’d definitely looking forward for a phone with HSDPA connectivity.

Other features include a large 2.2-inch display, auto-rotate screen orientation, picture/video blogging, and quad-band GPRS/EDGE network. Sony Ericsson K850i cell phone will be released in early Q4 2007 in two different flavours, Velvet Blue or Luminous Green.
