Nokia E65: Now comes with WiFi

nokia-e65.jpg

Nokia has rebranded the ever popular 6280 sliding real estate and added 802.11b WiFi connectivity.

I’ve always wondered how much it would cost a company to add additional features to phones. I remember writing before about how adding a Bluetooth module on a phone would cost roughly an additional one dollar. Can the same be said with WiFi? I guess so. With the way they mass produce these things, as well as with the way tech is getting more affordable, it does make sense to just include every possible feature conceived by man into mobile phones.

Ah. But that would kill the business model wouldn’t it? The E65 hinges on one of the better designed models of Nokia. “let’s turn this thing into a business phone” they said, by adding the “E” and wireless Internet.

You can view the full specs of the E65 here.

TIP: Turn off your mobile phone when taking 15 shots of *stuff*

img00042.jpg

Here’s a no brainer tip. When preparing to drink with friends, make sure you (1) order a lot of water, (2) have a barf bag ready and (3) turn off your mobile phone so that you don’t start sending weird messages to everyone in your contact list after the social lubrications.

And if you do ever come to my beautiful country, the Philippines, stop by Boracay Island and swoon with the alcohol.

ARGH! Why is it so hard for me to turn them on?!

Sexual connotations aside, this really pisses me off.

I don’t know if it’s just me, or phone manufacturers are giving incentives to people who read the manuals before trying to operate a phone. Sadly, I never had the luxury of opening up a phone from the box as units were more often than not handed to me in a paper bag for purposes of review.

It’s the Nokias ladies and gents. The Nokias get me all the time. I felt so useless trying to open up that — that lipstick phone of theirs because it needed a special pin that released a mechanism within the phone to open it up. And then there were those other phones that - for the love of all things tech - hid the SIM slot underneath the miniSD slot. Of course, I’m a master of this treacherous form of deceit now, but back then it was just so pitiful how I tried to insert the SIM card into the miniSD carriage, forcing it to be THE CORRECT ONE.

ph2007040500850.jpg

Thankfully, I’m not the only one at a loss for learning how to turn on a device. The Washinton Post’s tech guy was also confounded about how to turn on a Nokia N93, as the standard way of turning it on didn’t work.

Wait I’m not done yet! And every time Nokia decides to release a new, upgraded line of phones, why does the charger ends always have to change? Can’t they do a Motorola instead and ust use mini USBs?

BlackBerry 8820 On the Rumor Mill

he BlackBerry forums is a buzz with the rumor of the 8820 being out in the wild. A forum newbie by the name of Bigsmooth66 working for T Mobile has posted about the 8820, as he has seen the unit being tested by Robert Dotson, their company’s CEO. He says:

    1) I work for T-Mobile

    2) I just recently met the CEO, Robert Dotson

3)He is currently testing the 8820

    4)It has a camera and wi-fi

5)It will be out this summer.

6)It will be released along with T-Mobile@Home service.

7)They are still deciding on the color (they are leaning towards black)

8)It is closer to the size of the 8700 then it is to the 8800

Of course, info like this can get on the “my secret info is better than yours” title bout so let’s all just join in on the discussion. After all, a little gossip on the side could never hurt. :)

  • CDMA Connectivity

  • Dedicated Keys for video and camera

  • LED flash

  • 128 x 160 pixels color display

Angelina Jolie Orders No Cellphones at Daycare

Whenever Angelina Jolie drops off the kids at daycare, other parents aren’t allowed to make eye contact. Or even carry their cellphones. Or take pictures.

Star speaks with some very disgruntled daycare insiders that also drop their kids off at the $931 per month pre-school and daycare center. The report claims that when the Jolie-Pitt’s kids are in the house other parents aren’t allowed to take photos of their kids’ birthday parties. “Parents are instructed not to look at Angelina,” one source says.

Sheesh. They might as well issue horse blinders to every parent who enters the room. Or better yet, just have the Pitt-Jolie family hire a private nanny.

Too Good To Be True - Control Vehicle Using Bluetooth

Car Bluetooth Remote Control ImagesThis is probably too good to be true, but fortunately, it IS the real thing. This device, a home-made Nokia phone-driven remote control is able to control your car just like what you used to do with your R/C car back in your childhood. On the screen of the phone you can see a steering wheel, along with control for accelerating and braking. It takes advantage of the handset’s Bluetooth connectivity to wirelessly drive the car.

Hopefully, this concept phone can find its way to the production line.

Don't look now, but that Nokia in your pocket means you're over the hill

A survey of cellphone users in Australia, conducted by Panorama and released by Nielsen Media Research, has proved what pretty much everyone already knew: people are likely to base broad, stereotypical assumptions about you on your cellphone, just like they do with everything else you use and wear. We're guessing this breaks down a bit differently in Aussieland, but here's how mobile users tend to associate down under:

Nokia: Family-minded, middle aged managers, balance seekers, health conscious
Motorola: Fashion conscious, under 24, fun seekers, individualistic
Sony Ericsson: Ambitious young men, professionals, success driven, individualistic
LG: Favorite of mums, stay-at-home parents, success driven, harmony seekers
Samsung: Young women, career focused, success driven, fun seekers

The upshot of this research is that since most phone service providers rate the same, people are for the most part picking a carrier based on phone selection -- again, we're not exactly floored by the analysis here. Now all that's left is how to pigeon hole HTC and Palm users. We're thinking "good looking, fun loving, Engadget reader" would be a nice start.
